What a performance by our very own Rory MclLroy winning the 111th US Open at Congressional Country Club in Maryland by an amazing 8 shot victory finishing at 16 under par total for the tournament, he will make his way back to his home town golf club Holywood with the US Open trophy, for the second year in a row the trophy makes its way back to Northern Ireland, the only other country to win back to back US Opens was the United States itself previously to this win, so Northern Ireland golf has taken a giant leap forward with Rory and G Mac making it back to back wins! With rounds of 65, 66, 68 and a closing round of 69 it was always going to be his tournament and winning it wire to wire, he joins an illustrious group of players to manage a wire to wire to win in the US Open, Walter Hagen, Ben Hogan, our very own Tony Jacklin and of course the magical Tiger Woods. If only McIlroy had stayed at home this week, in Holywood, they would have contested a hell of a tournament. But he did not and they did not. Their consolation was a top-10 finish at a major championship and a ringside seat on the day potential greatness became greatness.
If not for a melt down in the final round at the Masters in April he could be potentially looking at a clean sweep of the 2011 major championships, putting all that aside he will win many more major championships and that continues at the Open Championship at Royal St George's in July!! Good luck Rory for 2011 and enjoy your celebrations when you get back home to Northern Ireland.
