Hit The Ball Like A Pro
Posted by Mark Allen
This week's 140th Open Championship which will be held at Royal St George's (Sandwich) in Kent. It will be a great chance to see the best players in the world take on a true links course. One major obstacle the Pro's may have to overcome is the generally strong wind at a links course. Wind can turn a normally leisurely round into a very challenging one. So, what will the Pro's be doing to adapt their game to contend in the years third major championship and what can we learn? Below are 3 simple steps to help you hit this specialist shot:
Take 2 more clubs than is normally needed. This does two things, firstly it will lower the initial launch of the ball due to the reduced loft on the golf club and secondly, it will reduce the need to create too much club-head speed which will put backspin onto the ball and consequently increase the height of the shot.
Change your set-up. The set-up should change in three ways, i) the ball will be placed towards the rear of your stance to reduce the loft at impact, ii) the club will be griped further down the club. This will reduce the amount of club-head speed and therefore the amount of spin on the ball. iii) The hands should then be placed ahead of the ball, this again reduces the club's loft and encourages a lower initial trajectory.
Finally, during the swing the top Pro's do not hit the ball hard (even into a strong wind). Hitting the ball hard will only cause the ball to go higher into the air and consequently be affected by the wind.
