How To Develop Belief

Posted by Mark Allen

Many times a golfer will be told that they should believe in themselves or we hear commentators saying "If this player believed in themselves they would take their game to the next level".

Is it possible to change a belief? Or are we stuck with our sometimes poor beliefs of ourselves? I hear regularly in Pro-Am's "I might be able to break 90 if I wasn't such a poor putter". These beliefs can be changed and I know all of you reading this emailer have changed a belief you once had at sometime!

Most (if not all) people believed in Father Christmas at sometime. We believed in him so much that we would listen out for him coming down the chimney to deliver our presentsand it would keep us awake at night. But, we now no longer believe in him which shows how a belief can be changed.

We can change a belief we have about our golf game the same way that we stopped believing in Father Christmas. We need to do it in just a few steps:

First we need to challenge the belief. When you say that your a rubbish putter, ask yourself if it's really true. Was the putt you missed just a miss-read?

Next we need to produce information to conflict the belief. This can be done by keeping a journal of all the best putts you hit. The journal must be written in detail and be in the first person.
Finally, we must develop a pre-shot routine that includes some positive self talk before the shot.

This process doesn't happen over night but as with Father Christmas the belief will be changed but this time you are in control of the belief.

Thanks Mark, I really appreciate your blog entries on improving my game. I do believe that golf is as much about your mental game as your physical game!
