Simple Tips for Great Bunker Shots
Posted by Mark Allen
1) Always keep your length of swing the same for bunker shots i.e. shoulder high to shoulder high.
2) Change the length of shot by opening your clubface more or less at address and compensate for this by opening your stance to the target. For example, if you open your clubface by 10 degrees you must open your stance and body by the same amount.
3) Place your weight onto your front foot and ensure your shoulders are open to the target.
4) Wiggle your feet into the sand to ensure a firm base.
5) On your downswing feel that your left shoulder rotates behind you. This will ensure you cut across the ball using the bounce of your sand wedge.
6) Finally, fully commit to the shot. If your clubhead speed slows down slightly coming into the ball you will catch the sand too far behind the ball and the ball will stay in the bunker.
It is vital to have the correct sand wedge for bunkers which includes having at least 12 degrees of bounce. For wet bunkers you may get more success by using a pitching wedge because it will have less bounce than your sand wedge.
